Purpose: To compare the effect of balanced salt solution (BSS) produced in Korea on endotheliume after phacoemulsification of cataract to that of the preexisting commercialized balanced salt solutions (BSS).
Methods: Forty-five eyes with senile cataract randomly assigned to three groups, 15 eyes for each group, underwent phacoemulsification and posterior chamber intraocular lens insertion performed by a single surgeon with balanced salt solution produced in Korea (Daehan BSS) and preexisting commercialized BSS (Alcon BSS, Iocare BSS), respectively. The subjects were followed up preoperatively, on 7 days, and 1 month after surgery and specular microscopy (corneal endothelial cell densities, percentage of hexagonal cells, coefficient variance of cell area, corneal thickness) was performed on the follow-up examinations. The results of specular microscopy were one another.
Results: Corneal endothelial cell counts, percentages of hexagonal cells, and corneal thickness did not show statistically significant differences among three groups (student ttest, P>0.05). Daehan BSS group showed significantly low coefficient variance of cell area on postoperative 1 month than the other groups (student t-test, P=0.01).
Conclusions: There were no significant differences among balanced salt solution produced in Korea(Daehan BSS) and preexisting commercialized BSS(Alcon BSS, Iocare BSS) on the effect to the corneal endothelium. Additonal larger studies are required including various factors which could influence the integrity of corneal endothelium.
